Bandon Dunes put a remote stretch of the southern Oregon coast on every serious golfer's map when Mike Keiser opened it in 1999, and it remains the course that started what has become one of the great golf destinations in the world. David McLay Kidd, then a largely unknown Scottish architect, was given the land and the freedom to route a firm, fast, walking-only links along dramatic bluffs above the Pacific, and the result launched not just his career but an entire resort empire built on the idea that golf could still be raw, natural, and unadorned by cart paths or condos.
Bandon itself is a small, weather-beaten fishing town on Oregon's rugged southern coast, a place of cranberry bogs, gorse-covered dunes, and a climate that swings from bright and calm to wind-whipped and sideways rain within the same round. That unpredictability is central to the experience: the coastal wind off the Pacific shapes strategy as much as any bunker or contour, and conditions can change a course's character from the front nine to the back.
As the original of what is now a multi-course resort, this layout set the tone for everything that followed at Bandon: caddies encouraged, pull-carts the only mechanical aid, and a clubhouse culture built around fireside drinks and shared stories of the day's bounces. It plays as a proper introduction to links golf in America, ground game and all.
