TPC Sawgrass is the course Pete Dye built to make players uncomfortable, and it has been doing exactly that since it opened in 1980. Commissioned by PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman as a permanent home for the Tour and a template for stadium-style spectator golf, Dye carved fairways out of Florida swampland, pushed up mounding for galleries, and left behind a course that rewards precision and punishes greed. It has hosted The Players Championship for decades, and its most famous hole, the par-3 17th with its island green, has decided more tournaments—and rattled more nerves—than almost any hole in the game.
Ponte Vedra Beach sits on Florida's northeast coast, just south of Jacksonville, in a stretch of the state built almost entirely around golf. The landscape here is low, marshy, and threaded with waste areas and water, the same terrain that gave Dye his raw materials and his ideas. Palm trees, pine stands, and Bermuda turf define the look, while the coastal climate keeps the course playable most of the year, with humidity and afternoon winds adding their own test.
As a resort course tied to the PGA Tour's own headquarters, the Stadium Course offers something rare: a chance to play the exact layout the pros face every March, greens and all. It draws golfers from around the world specifically for that reason, and the round carries the weight of that history with every step down the 18th fairway.
