Pete Dye built the Straits Course in the late 1990s along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, moving hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of earth and thousands of tons of sand to conjure a links landscape where none naturally existed. The result plays like a transplant from the Irish coast, complete with waving fescue, blind approaches, and thousands of bunkers, some so small and remote that rules officials had to clarify their status during championship play. Grazing sheep still roam the property between rounds, a nod to the linksland it imitates.
The course has hosted major championships, including the PGA Championship on multiple occasions and the 2021 Ryder Cup, and it carries the reputation those events built: a bruising, weather-exposed test where wind off the lake can turn a scoring hole into a card-wrecker in the span of an afternoon. Holes like the par-3 seventeenth, perched above the shoreline, and the closing stretch along the bluffs are the ones players remember long after the round ends.
Kohler itself has become a golf destination almost entirely because of Herb Kohler's investment in Pete Dye designs, and the Straits Course anchors that reputation. Playing here is as much about the theater of the setting, the lake views, the dunes, the sense of exposure, as it is about the round itself. It rewards patience and punishes ego in equal measure.
