Few American courses have arrived on the national stage as quickly or emphatically as Erin Hills. Opened in 2006 and designed by Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry, and Ron Whitman, it was awarded the U.S. Open in 2017, where Brooks Koepka's winning score drew attention to just how much room the layout gives big hitters while still demanding precision from the fairway bunkers and native fescue that frame nearly every hole. It's a young course with an old-soul feel, built across land that seems to have been waiting for golf all along.
That land is the real story. Erin Hills sits on a glacially sculpted stretch of Washington County, part of the Kettle Moraine region, where retreating ice sheets left behind rolling ridgelines, kettle basins, and exposed sandy soil ideal for firm, fast turf. The course was routed to expose these natural contours rather than reshape them, so the golf feels discovered rather than built, with movement underfoot on nearly every shot and wide horizons uncommon in Wisconsin's more wooded, lake-country courses.
As a walking-only public course, Erin Hills asks players to experience that terrain the way it was meant to be felt, on foot, with caddies available to help decode blind angles and swirling winds. It's less than an hour from Milwaukee, making a genuine championship experience accessible to any golfer willing to trade a cart for a walk across some of the most compelling ground in American golf.
