Few American public courses carry a résumé like this one. Opened in 2007 on the site of a former sand-and-gravel quarry above Puget Sound, Chambers Bay was built by Robert Trent Jones II to evoke the windswept links of Scotland and Ireland, and it made good on that ambition fast: by 2015 it was hosting the U.S. Open, where Jordan Spieth held off Dustin Johnson's late collapse on the 18th green. The land itself is the star — dramatic dune-like contours, few trees, and a single lonely Douglas fir standing sentinel near the first tee, a landmark golfers still talk about.
The course sits on a bluff in University Place, just south of Tacoma, with views out across the water to the Olympic Mountains and steady marine breezes that shape every shot. This is Pacific Northwest golf at its most elemental: firm, fast fescue turf, muted green-and-tan hues, and weather that can shift from calm to blustery within a round. It's walkable and often walked-only, in keeping with its links character, and the routing rewards those willing to read the ground rather than the air.
As a Pierce County-owned public facility, Chambers Bay offers a rare thing — a genuine championship links experience open to anyone willing to take it on. It plays firm, demands patience, and asks golfers to think their way around rather than overpower it, making for a round that feels closer to St. Andrews than to a typical municipal layout.
