Few public courses in America carry the tournament pedigree of Cog Hill No. 4. For decades "Dubsdread" served as home to the PGA Tour, hosting the Western Open and later the BMW Championship, drawing the game's best players to a layout that more than earned its forbidding nickname. Dick Wilson's original design was reworked by Rees Jones in the 2000s, deepening bunkers and tightening corridors in hopes of keeping the course tour-ready — the kind of pedigree that still shapes how the course is talked about and played today by everyday golfers chasing that same challenge.
Set among the four courses of the Cog Hill complex in Lemont, the layout takes advantage of the rolling, wooded terrain southwest of Chicago, where glacial moraine topography gives the fairways more movement than the flat prairie golf found elsewhere in the region. Mature stands of oak line many holes, framing shots and demanding real precision off the tee, while the surrounding Lemont countryside offers a quieter, more pastoral backdrop than the courses closer to the city.
As a longtime public daily-fee operation built by the Jemsek family, Cog Hill No. 4 has always stood for the idea that championship-caliber golf should be accessible to any player willing to pay a green fee. It remains a pilgrimage stop for Chicago-area golfers and traveling players alike, offering a taste of tour-level design and difficulty without private-club walls around it.
