Perched on the bluffs above the Pacific in La Jolla, the South Course at Torrey Pines has grown from a city-owned public layout into one of the most recognizable stages in professional golf. William F. Bell laid out the original design in the 1950s, and Rees Jones reworked it in the early 2000s to sharpen its teeth ahead of hosting the U.S. Open in 2008, where Tiger Woods won on a broken leg in a playoff that has become part of championship lore. The course remains the site of the PGA Tour's annual Farmers Insurance Open, giving it a rare dual identity as both a civic muni and a championship battleground.
What sets the round apart is the setting: fairways run along coastal cliffs with the ocean visible on multiple holes, framed by eucalyptus groves, sandstone canyons, and the sea breeze rolling in off the water. The closing stretch, including the cliffside par-3 and the demanding finishing holes, plays out with the Pacific as a constant backdrop, and gliders can often be seen riding the air currents overhead near the Torrey Pines Gliderport just next door.
Because it's owned by the City of San Diego, tee times are open to the public, a rarity for a course of this caliber and reputation. Golfers here are walking the same turf as the sport's biggest stars, in a region known for its mild, sun-soaked climate and laid-back coastal culture, making a round at Torrey Pines South as much a pilgrimage as a game.
