Few municipal courses carry the résumé of Harding Park. Opened in 1925 and laid out by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting, the same architects behind Olympic Club's Lake Course nearby, it spent decades as a beloved if unglamorous public track before a Robert Trent Jones Jr. restoration and a partnership with the PGA Tour's TPC network restored its teeth. Since then it has hosted a WGC event where Tiger Woods beat John Daly in a playoff, the 2009 Presidents Cup, and the 2020 PGA Championship, won by Collin Morikawa. That tournament pedigree sits atop a genuinely public muni, a rare combination in American golf.
The course occupies a spit of land between Lake Merced and the Pacific, and the setting shapes every round. Towering cypress and eucalyptus corridor the fairways, fog rolls in off the ocean, and the marine layer keeps temperatures cool and the turf firm even in summer. San Francisco's golf scene has long centered on this stretch of the city's southwestern edge, where Harding Park anchors a cluster of storied layouts.
Walking the back nine along the lake, with the closing holes tightening under those cypress canopies, gives even casual municipal play a championship atmosphere rarely found outside private gates.
