Few courses in the world carry the mystique of Cypress Point. Opened in 1928 and designed by Alister MacKenzie, working with Marion Hollins, the club sits on a stretch of the Monterey Peninsula where forest, dune, and rocky Pacific shoreline collide within a single round. MacKenzie considered it among his finest works, and generations of architects and players have agreed, ranking it consistently among the greatest golf courses anywhere. Its routing famously moves through three distinct landscapes — pine and cypress woodland, wind-swept dunes, and finally the dramatic cliffs above Monterey Bay.
That closing run along the water, particularly the par-3 sixteenth playing across a churning ocean inlet, is among the most photographed and admired stretches in golf, once part of the rotation for the old Bing Crosby Pro-Am before the club stepped away from tournament play. The surrounding Pebble Beach area is golf's most storied address in America, and Cypress Point's setting captures the region's rugged, cypress-studded coastline as well as any course on the peninsula.
Membership remains intensely private, and a round here is something close to a pilgrimage for those who manage an invitation. The atmosphere is understated rather than showy — old money, old architecture, and a sense that the golf itself, shaped by wind, cliff, and native landscape, is the whole point. Walking it feels less like a game and more like an encounter with the coast itself.
