Pasatiempo carries one of the great names in American golf architecture, and for good reason: Alister MacKenzie built it in 1929 and considered it his personal favorite among all his designs, reportedly building a home alongside the 6th fairway so he could live on the property he loved most. That pedigree places it in the same conversation as Augusta National and Cypress Point, MacKenzie's other American landmarks, and the course has hosted USGA championships and remains a pilgrimage stop for architecture enthusiasts who want to see his strategic principles executed on rugged, natural ground rather than flattened for convenience.
Santa Cruz itself sits where the Santa Cruz Mountains meet Monterey Bay, a college town with a surfing identity and a laid-back coastal energy that seeps into the golf experience here. The front nine plays through rolling, open meadowland with ocean glimpses, while the back nine climbs into eucalyptus groves and barranca-crossed terrain that feels closer to Scottish links turned loose in California chaparral. Marine layer fog is common on summer mornings, burning off to reveal a course that changes character as the day goes on.
As a semi-private club, Pasatiempo opens its MacKenzie masterpiece to visiting golfers willing to plan ahead, a rare chance to walk grounds usually reserved for membership. The par-70 routing rewards shot-making and course management over brute strength, consistent with MacKenzie's belief that great golf should challenge the mind as much as the swing.
