Fishhook Golf Course

Palmer sits in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley about 45 miles northeast of Anchorage, a broad agricultural valley framed by the Talkeetna Mountains to the north and the Chugach range to the south. It's one of Alaska's more established communities, and the surrounding landscape — wide open farmland giving way to dense boreal forest — is as dramatic a backdrop as you'll find anywhere on a golf course in North America.

Fishhook GC takes its name from Fishhook Road, the route that climbs out of Palmer toward Hatcher Pass and the old Independence Mine country. Alaska golf operates on its own calendar, with a short but intense season when the subarctic daylight stretches well past 10 p.m. in midsummer, making late rounds genuinely playable. That long light and the clean mountain air give the game here a quality that's genuinely hard to replicate farther south.

As a full 18-hole, par-72 layout in a region where golf facilities are relatively scarce, Fishhook serves a valley community hungry for the game — likely a welcoming, unpretentious track where the scenery does a great deal of the heavy lifting.
