Few golf clubs in the Caribbean carry as much history as Constant Spring, which has been part of Kingston's sporting fabric since 1920. Laid out on the former Constant Spring Hotel estate in the hills north of the city, the course was designed by the prolific Canadian architect Stanley Thompson — one of the most celebrated designers of his era — making it a genuinely rare piece of architectural heritage in this part of the world. Over a century of play has given the course a lived-in character that newer resort layouts simply cannot replicate.
The setting does a great deal of the work. The Blue Mountains rise dramatically to the east, and the property's mature tropical vegetation — broad-canopied trees, dense flowering shrubs — gives almost every hole a sense of enclosure and shade that golfers in Jamaica's heat will appreciate. The terrain is gently rolling rather than punishing, routing through grounds that still carry echoes of the old plantation estate.
As Kingston's premier private members' club, Constant Spring has long been the social and competitive center of Jamaican golf. The par 70 layout rewards accuracy and course management over raw power, and its tight, tree-lined corridors have a way of humbling visitors who underestimate it.
