Few clubs in South Africa carry as much history as Metropolitan Golf Club, one of the oldest and most storied in the country. Founded in the late 19th century, the club has operated on its current site in Mouille Point — on the Atlantic seaboard, just minutes from the V&A Waterfront — for well over a century. Its location is extraordinary: a low-lying coastal layout running through the suburb with Table Mountain as a near-constant backdrop and the Atlantic Ocean framing the western edge of the city skyline.
The course itself plays firm and fast, shaped by persistent Cape southesters that can transform a modest-looking layout into a genuine examination of shot-making. Wind management is as important here as club selection, and the premium on controlling trajectory rewards the experienced, creative ball-striker over the bomber.
Metropolitan sits at the heart of Cape Town's golfing identity — a members' club with deep civic roots and a character shaped by more than a century of play. For visitors, the combination of genuine historical atmosphere and one of the world's more dramatic urban settings makes it genuinely distinctive.
