Flying Horse North sits at the northern edge of Colorado Springs, part of an upscale planned community that brought Tom Weiskopf in to design a course worthy of its Rocky Mountain setting. Weiskopf, one of the more thoughtful architect-players of his generation, shaped the layout to work with the high-desert terrain rather than against it — elevation changes are real and meaningful, and the views toward Pikes Peak and the Front Range give rounds here a scale that few urban-adjacent courses can match.
The club operates as a private facility serving the Flying Horse residential community, which means the conditions and pace of play reflect that members-first ethos. At altitude, the ball flies noticeably farther than sea level, a recalibration every visiting golfer has to make, and the Colorado sun and thin air can turn an afternoon round into something demanding in ways a scorecard never quite captures.
Colorado Springs has quietly built a legitimate golf identity — between the military courses, the resort tracks near the Air Force Academy, and private clubs like this one, it punches well above its size as a golf destination.
