Few private clubs in northern New England carry the quiet prestige of Penobscot Valley Country Club. Founded in the early 20th century and situated in Orono — home to the University of Maine — the club has long served as the social and sporting anchor of the Bangor-area golf community. Donald Ross left his mark here, shaping a layout that rewards thoughtful play over raw power, with the subtly contoured greens and strategic bunkering that defined his best work across the region.
The Penobscot River valley frames the setting, and the course moves through a mature mix of hardwoods that paint the property in dramatic color come September and October. Maine's short season sharpens the experience — members make the most of every round between snowmelt and the first hard frost, giving the club a collegial, community feel that resort courses rarely replicate.
As a private, members-only club, Penobscot Valley rewards those with a connection to its rolls. The combination of Ross's design intelligence and the rugged northern Maine landscape makes this one of the more rewarding rounds available in the state.
