Few courses in Britain carry the weight of history that Balgownie does. The links at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club — to give it its full name — dates to 1780, making it one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, and the Balgownie links has been shaped and refined over centuries into one of Scotland's most respected championship tests. The great Archie Simpson laid the groundwork for the current routing in the late 19th century, and the course has changed remarkably little since, a testament to how well the natural terrain was read from the start.
The layout runs through classic Aberdeen links land north of the city, where the holes move through a corridor of towering rough bents and dune ridges that largely conceal each hole from the next, creating an atmosphere of almost complete isolation. The front 9 heads out along the North Sea shore before the back 9 returns, and the wind — reliably present — changes the course's character entirely depending on direction.
Balgownie has hosted multiple Scottish Opens and significant amateur events, and consistently ranks among Scotland's top 10 links. It rewards patience and invention over power, and those who know links golf well tend to regard it with particular affection.
