Cape May Courthouse sits at the southern tip of New Jersey, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic, and the landscape here is defined by salt marshes, scrub pine, and the flat, open terrain of the Jersey Cape. Golf in this corner of the Shore has always carried a certain unhurried character — the crowds thin out, the breezes pick up off the water, and the setting does much of the work.
Avalon Golf Club serves the communities of the Cape May peninsula, including the barrier island borough of Avalon just a few miles to the east. A par 71 layout in this environment almost certainly plays into prevailing coastal winds that can transform a comfortable afternoon round into something considerably more demanding, with yardage numbers meaning far less than the direction of the breeze on any given hole.
For visitors making the trip down the Garden State Parkway, Avalon offers a grounded, Shore-flavored round away from the busier resort corridors of Atlantic City and Ocean City to the north — straightforward golf in a place where the salt air and flat light have their own quiet appeal.
