Few American golf courses can claim a history as deep as Del Monte Golf Course. Opened in 1897, it stands as one of the oldest operating golf courses west of the Mississippi, built to serve the grand Del Monte Hotel that made Monterey a destination for California's elite. The layout predates Pebble Beach by more than two decades, and while it has long lived in the shadow of its famous Monterey Peninsula neighbors, that reputation undersells a course with genuine character and a palpable sense of another era.
