Few public courses in Kentucky have earned the consistent praise that Gibson Bay has gathered over the decades. Designed by Michael Hurdzan and opened in 1991, the course was built on land that rolls through the Bluegrass region's characteristic mix of open meadows and mature woodlands, and it quickly established itself as one of the state's premier daily-fee layouts. Hurdzan's design philosophy favors strategic variety over brute length, rewarding players who think their way around rather than simply overpower it.
The course sits just outside Richmond, home to Eastern Kentucky University and a community with a genuine sporting culture. The surrounding landscape is quintessential Inner Bluegrass — gently contoured terrain, limestone-fed soil, and the kind of lush turf conditions that make Kentucky courses play differently from anything you'll find in flatter, drier states.
Gibson Bay has routinely appeared on Kentucky's best public courses lists, and the reputation is earned. It plays as a serious test for low handicappers while remaining approachable enough that recreational golfers leave satisfied rather than humbled.
