Few courses in American golf carry the weight of Oak Hill's East Course. Designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1926, then significantly reshaped by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in the 1950s and later refined by Tom Fazio, it stands as one of the most tested venues in the country — a card-carrying member of golf's major championship circuit that has hosted the U.S. Open 4 times, the PGA Championship 3 times (most recently in 2023), the Ryder Cup in 1995, and multiple Tour events. It belongs to a very short list of courses that have genuinely shaped professional golf's history.
The course occupies a quiet, tree-lined corner of Rochester's suburbs, its rolling terrain threaded with Allen's Creek and framed by the mature oaks that give the club its name. The par-70 layout plays longer and harder than that number suggests — Ross's routing demands precision off the tee, and the small, contoured greens punish anything but exact approach play.
Rochester is a serious golf town, and Oak Hill sits at the top of its hierarchy without question. For members, it offers something rare: a private club where the turf beneath your feet has decided major championships.
