Few golf experiences in the Northeast blend the game with quite this much grandeur. Mohonk Golf Course sits on the grounds of Mohonk Mountain House, the Victorian-era resort that has presided over the Shawangunk Ridge since 1869. The course is inseparable from that legacy — playing here means moving through a landscape of dramatic cliffs, glacial lakes, and old-growth forest that the Smiley family has stewarded for generations. It's a setting that earns your attention even before you've struck a shot.
The Shawangunks, known to climbers and hikers as "the Gunks," define the terrain in ways a scorecard cannot capture. Elevation changes are real, sight lines are memorable, and the natural contours of the land do much of the design work. At par 70, the layout doesn't try to overwhelm with length — it asks for precision and course management in a place that would reward a slower pace regardless.
Mohonk is the kind of course where non-golfers in your group might actually want to walk the round. That says something.
