The Erbil Highlands Golf Club sits on the outskirts of Erbil, the ancient capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq — one of the most historically layered cities on earth, built around a citadel that has been continuously inhabited for over 6,000 years. Golf in this part of the Middle East is a relatively recent pursuit, and a course at elevation above the Erbil plain represents a genuine frontier for the game in the region, drawing a mix of expatriates, international business travelers, and a growing local membership curious about the sport.
The highlands setting northeast of the city offers a cooler, more forgiving climate than the scorching summer lowlands, where temperatures routinely exceed 45°C. The terrain here tends toward open, arid scrubland with views back toward the urban sprawl and, on clear days, the distant Zagros Mountains — a dramatic backdrop that no scorecard can capture.
Kurdistan's golf scene is still in its early chapters, which gives a course like this a pioneering quality. Whoever plays here is participating in something genuinely new: the slow, patient building of a golf culture in one of the world's oldest corners of civilization.
