Few golf courses have entered the world stage as dramatically as this one. Built specifically to host the golf competition at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics — the sport's return to the Games after a 112-year absence — the course was designed by Gil Hanse, the American architect known for his work at Castle Stuart and his restoration of some of the game's great historic layouts. From the moment it opened, the venue carried a significance well beyond its scorecard.
Hanse and his team carved the layout through the Reserva de Marapendi, a protected ecological zone in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, routing holes alongside coastal lagoons and through stands of native restinga vegetation. The result is a design with genuine strategic variety and real visual drama — ocean glimpses, shifting breezes off the Atlantic, and wildlife that makes no concession to the competition. The course played host to men's and women's competitions that produced memorable finishes and, for many players, a first Olympic medal in golf.
Today the course functions as a members' club, though its Olympic legacy gives it a gravity that most new courses take generations to accumulate. Playing here means walking the same ground where Inbee Park and Justin Rose claimed gold — a rare thing in the relatively short history of Brazilian golf.
