Ratingen sits in the Bergisches Land fringe just east of Düsseldorf, part of one of Germany's densest concentrations of golf clubs — the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region supports a remarkably active golf culture, and clubs here tend to draw a mix of serious club members and urban escapees from the surrounding cities. The Hösel district, where Golf Club Hösel makes its home, is a quiet, residential corner of Ratingen with a distinctly different pace from the industrial heritage that defines much of the wider Ruhr valley.
Golf Club Hösel itself operates 2 layouts on the same property — the Nordplatz being the northern of the pair. Parkland conditions dominate, with mature trees framing most holes and a generally flat to gently rolling terrain typical of this stretch of the lower Rhine plain. The layout rewards accuracy over length, as tree-lined corridors leave little room for errant tee shots, and the grassed surfaces tend to run true through much of the season.
For visiting golfers, the club carries the feel of a well-established private members' operation — sociable and well-maintained, without the pretension of a destination resort. A round here is fundamentally a local experience, rooted in the everyday golf culture of the greater Düsseldorf area.
