Few public courses in the Denver metro carry as much history beneath their fairways as Fitzsimons. The course sits on the grounds of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, a sprawling military campus that treated wounded soldiers from World War I through its closure in 1999. That legacy gives the place an unusual gravity — you're playing through land that served the country for nearly a century before it was reimagined as part of a broader redevelopment effort anchored by the Anschutz Medical Campus, one of the largest medical research centers in the nation.
Aurora itself sits on the high plains just east of Denver, where the Front Range gives way to open sky and the Rockies dominate the western horizon on clear days. Golf here means thin air, firm turf, and the kind of wide, sun-drenched conditions that define public golf along Colorado's urban corridor.
As a municipal layout open to the public, Fitzsimons serves the everyday golfer — a community course with an uncommon address and a backstory worth knowing before you tee it up.
