Few venues in American golf carry the institutional weight of Champions Golf Club. Founded in 1957 by tour professionals Jack Burke Jr. and Jimmy Demaret — 2 of the most celebrated figures of their era — the club was conceived from the start as a serious championship venue, not merely a private retreat. Its Cypress Creek Course hosted the 1969 U.S. Open, where Orville Moody claimed one of golf's great upset victories, and the club went on to host Ryder Cups, U.S. Amateurs, and Tour Championships, cementing its place in the national conversation. The course was designed by Ralph Plummer and later refined, featuring the tree-lined, strategically demanding layout that defined Texas parkland golf at its most rigorous.
Houston sits in the Gulf Coast lowlands — flat, humid, and prone to weather that can shift a round dramatically. The heat and afternoon storms of a Texas summer are as much a part of playing Champions as the fairways themselves.
