Few stretches of the English south coast carry more golfing atmosphere than the flatlands between Bexhill-on-Sea and Cooden, where the English Channel sits on the horizon and the prevailing south-westerly winds turn a seemingly straightforward links-influenced layout into a genuine examination of shot-making. Cooden Beach Golf Club has been part of this landscape since the early 20th century, long enough to have developed the kind of settled, unhurried character that East Sussex seaside golf does particularly well.
The course plays across open, relatively level ground typical of this corner of the Sussex coast, but the wind rarely lets you treat it as a formality. Club selection shifts constantly, low running approaches often make more sense than high-trajectory irons, and the exposed back nine in particular rewards local knowledge. It is the sort of course that feels different every time the weather changes — which, on the Channel coast, is frequently.
Bexhill itself is a quietly dignified seaside town, best known for the De La Warr Pavilion and a genteel, unhurried pace that suits a club like this. Cooden Beach feels genuinely rooted in its place — a proper members' club where the golf and the setting reinforce each other.
