Lake Chapala, the largest freshwater lake in Mexico, forms the backdrop for one of Jalisco's more distinctive rounds of golf. The town of Chapala sits about 45 kilometers south of Guadalajara along the lake's northern shore, a region long favored by Mexican city-dwellers and a sizable foreign expatriate community for its mild, spring-like climate — locals will tell you the weather here barely changes between January and July, a product of the lake's moderating influence at roughly 1,500 meters of elevation.
Without reliable details on the course's architect or founding history, it's worth saying plainly that the setting does considerable work. Golf along this shoreline tends to trade dramatic elevation changes for views across the water toward the Sierra de Chapala, and the surrounding vegetation — bougainvillea, jacaranda, mature trees — gives rounds a lush, almost subtropical feel that's unusual for highland Mexico.
