The Angeles City area of Pampanga has long been one of the Philippines' more active golf corridors, sitting roughly 80 kilometers north of Manila in the shadow of the Zambales mountain range. The region carries a distinctive character shaped by its proximity to the former Clark Air Base, whose closure in 1991 following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo transformed thousands of acres into the Clark Freeport Zone — a sprawling special economic area that now houses hotels, casinos, entertainment facilities, and several golf courses.
Fontana Golf sits within the Fontana Leisure Parks and Casino complex inside Clark, a resort destination that draws weekend escapes from Metro Manila as well as visitors from the broader Luzon region. The layout occupies grounds that reflect the freeport zone's lush postvolcanic recovery, with the surrounding landscape having regenerated considerably in the decades since Pinatubo's ashfall. That combination of tropical heat, occasional mountain breezes from the Zambales range, and verdant fairways gives the course a resort feel distinct from the tighter, more urban tracks closer to Manila.
For golfers based in the capital, Clark-area courses represent a genuine change of pace — a reason to build a weekend around the game rather than squeeze in a quick round.
