Shelter Cove sits at the southern end of the Lost Coast, one of the most remote stretches of coastline in the contiguous United States. The tiny community — reachable only by a winding mountain road that drops dramatically from the King Range — draws hikers, divers, and anglers more than golfers, which makes having any golf course here a genuine surprise. The Pacific defines the horizon, the King Range rises sharply behind town, and black-sand beaches run the length of the shore.
A par 66 tells you right away that this layout leans heavily on short par 4s and par 3s rather than length, which suits the rugged, compact terrain of a coastal community where flat land is scarce. That kind of design tends to reward placement and touch over raw power, and in a setting this exposed, coastal wind almost certainly plays a significant role in how the card actually scores.
For visiting golfers, the appeal here is less about the caliber of the test and more about the sheer improbability of the location. Playing golf on the Lost Coast, with that landscape surrounding you, is simply not something you can replicate anywhere else in California.
