Woodway Country Club carries one of the more distinguished pedigrees in Connecticut golf. The course was designed by Seth Raynor, the protégé of Charles Blair Macdonald and one of the most consequential architects of American golf's golden age. Like Raynor's best work, Woodway is built around his signature "template" holes — faithful interpretations of celebrated Scottish and English originals, including versions of the Redan, the Alps, and the Biarritz — giving the course a cerebral, strategic quality that rewards shot-making over raw power. Raynor died in 1926, leaving a relatively small body of work, which makes each surviving example the more worth seeking out.
Darien sits in Fairfield County's Gold Coast corridor, a stretch of southwestern Connecticut long associated with serious, old-money private clubs. The surrounding landscape is wooded and gently rolling, and the club carries the quiet, members-first character you'd expect from that tradition.
