Few English inland courses carry the pedigree of Luffenham Heath. Laid out by Harry Vardon in 1911, it sits on a ridge of heathland in Rutland — England's smallest county — and represents one of the finest examples of heathland golf in the Midlands. The course has changed little in essence from Vardon's original design, a testament to how well the routing suited the natural terrain, and it holds a strong reputation among connoisseurs of traditional English golf.
The heathland setting is the defining character here: heather, gorse, and fine turf framing tight corridors across rolling ground, with the kind of firm, fast conditions that reward ground game thinking over aerial power. At par 70, the course plays shorter than many heathland tests but demands precision rather than length, and wayward shots into the heather extract a genuine penalty.
Rutland itself is easy to overlook — a quiet, largely rural county more associated with its famous reservoir and stone villages than with golf — but that remoteness is part of the appeal. Luffenham Heath feels properly unhurried, the sort of members' club where the game is taken seriously and the setting does much of the talking.
