Few links courses carry the weight of history that Royal Cinque Ports does. Founded in 1892 along the shingle and duneland of the Kent coast, the club has hosted the Open Championship twice — in 1909, won by J.H. Taylor, and in 1920, won by George Duncan — and has been a perennial contender for a return to the Open rota. The course stretches along a narrow strip of land between the English Channel and the old Dover-to-Sandwich railway line, a constraint that gives the layout its distinctive out-and-back character and exposes every hole to the full force of the coastal wind.
Deal itself is a quietly handsome seaside town with a genuine sense of place — a former Cinque Port (the medieval confederation of Kent and Sussex harbours) sitting between Sandwich to the north and Dover to the south, in a stretch of southeast England that arguably contains the greatest concentration of links golf anywhere in the world.
The course rewards patience and imagination over power. Low running shots, wind-reading, and creativity around the greens matter far more than distance. Royal Cinque Ports is demanding in the way that the finest traditional British links demand things: it asks you to think, adapt, and accept whatever the sea air decides to throw at you that day.
