The Takaka Golf Club occupies a stretch of the Golden Bay flatlands at the top of the South Island — one of New Zealand's most geographically isolated and scenically extraordinary pockets of land. Reached by crossing the Takaka Hill, a winding mountain pass that separates Golden Bay from the rest of Tasman, this is a course that rewards the journey just to reach it. The surrounding landscape is defined by limestone karst country, lush river valleys, and the broad sweep of Golden Bay itself, with the Kahurangi National Park rising to the south.
As a small-town rural club, the course reflects the unpretentious, community-first spirit that defines golf in provincial New Zealand. Locals take their golf seriously here, and the club serves as a genuine social hub for the Tākaka township and surrounding farming community.
Golden Bay's climate is notably sunnier and warmer than much of the South Island, making for a long playing season. Visitors passing through on their way to Farewell Spit or Abel Tasman will find this an honest, welcoming club worth a round.
