Few Scottish inland courses can claim quite the same setting as Spey Valley, which occupies a stretch of Strathspey framed by the Cairngorm mountains — Britain's largest national park and one of its most dramatic highland landscapes. Designed by Dave Thomas and opened in 2008, it was conceived as a championship-caliber layout capable of hosting elite amateur and professional events, and it has since earned a reputation as one of the most significant golf developments in the Scottish Highlands in decades.
Thomas shaped the course across rolling moorland terrain, working with heather, birch, and pine to produce something that feels genuinely rooted in its surroundings rather than imposed upon them. The routing takes full advantage of the natural contours of the Spey valley floor, with the river itself and the broader Cairngorm plateau providing constant visual orientation.
Aviemore sits at the heart of Scotland's outdoor sports culture — skiing in winter, hiking and cycling in summer — so Spey Valley draws an active, adventurous crowd. The course plays long and demands a full range of shots, with the highland air and open exposures making club selection a genuine puzzle throughout.
