Rees Jones designed Danzante Bay Golf Club, which opened in 2015 as part of the Villa del Palmar resort development on the Baja California Sur peninsula. The course is built across volcanic terrain that rises dramatically from the Sea of Cortez, and the elevation changes are among the most striking of any resort course in Mexico — fairways and greens are carved into and around ancient lava fields, with the islands of the Loreto Bay National Marine Park visible from nearly every hole. The combination of desert scrub, cactus, and open ocean views makes the setting feel genuinely wild rather than manicured into submission.
Loreto is a small colonial town widely regarded as one of Baja's most authentic destinations, well removed from the resort corridors of Los Cabos to the south. The golf here reflects that remoteness — this is destination golf in the truest sense, requiring commitment to reach.
The par of 75 is unusual and intentional, reflecting a layout that favors interest over convention. Expect a round that rewards shot-making and patience over raw distance, with the scenery doing as much work on your memory as any particular hole.
