Few desert golf experiences in the American Southwest carry quite the character of Painted Dunes, a public facility set against the raw Chihuahuan Desert landscape on El Paso's northeast side. The course takes its name seriously — the surrounding terrain is a study in earth tones, with the Franklin Mountains forming a dramatic western backdrop and the wide skies of Far West Texas overhead. This is high desert at roughly 4,000 feet of elevation, which means the ball flies farther than visitors expect, and the thin air rewards a smooth swing.
El Paso occupies its own distinct corner of the golf world, closer to Albuquerque and Tucson than to Dallas, and Painted Dunes has long served as one of the city's go-to public options for players who want something more scenic than a flat municipal layout. The North/West combination is 1 of 3 nine-hole loops on the property, giving regulars variety across return visits.
Desert-style design means native scrub lines the corridors and errant shots face sandy, unforgiving lies — accuracy matters here as much as distance, and the course rewards those who respect the terrain rather than muscle their way around it.
