Few courses in America carry the weight of Prairie Dunes. Perry Maxwell laid out the original 9 holes in 1937, finding in the Kansas sandhills a landscape so naturally suited to golf that he reportedly said only 9 more holes were needed — and nothing else should be touched. His son Press Maxwell completed the second 9 in 1957, and the routing has remained essentially unchanged since. The result is a course that feels discovered rather than built, with tumbling fairways, native yucca, and sand scrub framing holes that reward imagination over brute force.
The club has hosted some of the most significant championships in American golf — the U.S. Women's Open twice, the U.S. Senior Open, and the U.S. Mid-Amateur — performances that have consistently surprised those expecting a flyover-country footnote and instead found a links-style examination of every shot in the game.
Hutchinson sits in the heart of the Kansas plains, where the wind is a permanent 5th playing partner and conditions shift without warning. Prairie Dunes is routinely ranked among the top 20 courses in the United States, and the golf world treats the trip to central Kansas as a genuine pilgrimage.
