Solferino/San Martino

Pozzolengo sits on the low Lombard hills south of Lake Garda, a corner of northern Italy where the landscape carries an unusual weight of history. The ground around here — particularly the plains stretching toward Solferino and San Martino della Battaglia — is where one of the 19th century's bloodiest engagements was fought in 1859, a battle whose aftermath directly inspired Henry Dunant to found the Red Cross.
