Few courses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area carry the design pedigree that Old American Golf Club does. Opened in 2012 on the northern shore of Lake Lewisville, it was crafted by Tripp Davis and Justin Leonard — yes, that Justin Leonard, the 1997 Open Championship winner — as a deliberate love letter to golden-age American golf. The routing draws heavily from the look and feel of 1920s and 1930s design: wide, rumpled fairways, bold false fronts, deep pot bunkers, and greens that reward ground-game thinking as much as aerial attack.
The Colony sits in Denton County, roughly 30 miles north of Dallas, where the sprawl of the Metroplex gives way to lake country. Old American's Lake Lewisville frontage is no incidental backdrop — several holes play along or directly toward the water, and the wind off the lake is a genuine factor that can turn a comfortable round uncomfortable in a hurry.
The club operates as a semi-private facility, making the course accessible without requiring a membership. For a region dense with competition, Old American has carved out a genuine identity — a course that looks backward to play forward, and one that rewards players willing to use the whole ground.
