Few public courses in northeast Ohio carry the architectural pedigree of Avalon Lakes. Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1967, it ranks among the most significant layouts in the state — a bold, demanding design that put this corner of the Mahoning Valley on the national golf map long before Dye became a household name. The course has hosted multiple Web.com Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour) events, giving it a competitive résumé that most public tracks can only dream about.
Dye's fingerprints are unmistakable here: railroad ties framing bunkers and water hazards, forced carries over ponds, and greens that demand precise approach angles. The layout plays long and honest, rewarding ball-strikers while penalizing anything loose. Several holes along the lake corridors are genuinely memorable — visually striking and strategically layered in the way that defines Dye's best work from that era.
