Almaguin Highlands Golf & Country Club sits in the heart of Ontario's Almaguin Highlands, the rugged shield country north of Huntsville where the Canadian wilderness starts to assert itself in earnest. Katrine is a small community tucked between lakes and granite outcroppings along the Highway 11 corridor, a region that draws cottagers and outdoor enthusiasts from the Greater Toronto Area each summer. The golf season up here is compressed by a shorter northern Ontario summer, which gives membership a particular intensity — rounds are earned and savored.
The club carries the character of the landscape it occupies: Canadian Shield topography means elevation changes, exposed rock, mature hardwoods and conifers, and the kind of natural framing that course architects used to have to manufacture elsewhere. That setting alone creates memorable golf, where the terrain does much of the strategic work.
As a private members' club in a cottage-country community, Almaguin Highlands functions as a social anchor for the region's seasonal and year-round residents alike, offering the unhurried pace and familiarity that defines the better country clubs of Ontario's near north.
