Few American golf courses have a backstory quite like Victoria National's. Carved from a reclaimed strip mine in southwestern Indiana — the Newburgh area sits just across the Ohio River from Kentucky — the club commissioned Tom Fazio to transform a scarred, post-industrial landscape into something spectacular. Opened in 1998, the result is widely considered one of Fazio's finest works: a design that turns the mine's leftover topography — deep excavation cuts, dramatic elevation changes, sandy waste areas — into a course that feels ancient and rugged rather than manufactured.
Victoria National has ranked consistently among the top 100 courses in the United States and has appeared regularly in Golf Magazine and Golf Digest rankings, with some lists placing it inside the top 50. The private club maintains a reputation for exceptional conditioning and an experience that rewards shot-making and imagination over raw power.
The surrounding tri-state corner of Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois sits along the Ohio River Valley, a region of rolling hardwood forests and significant industrial history. On the course, that history reads as drama — elevation and exposure that simply don't exist at most Midwestern layouts.
