New Bern carries more history than most American towns its size — founded in 1710, it served as colonial North Carolina's capital and still wears that past visibly in its streets and architecture. The town sits where the Neuse and Trent rivers converge, and that tidal, coastal-plain geography shapes everything around it: flat terrain punctuated by water, longleaf pine, and the kind of humid air that makes fairways play soft and lush through much of the year.
