Few public courses in the Chicago suburbs carry the design pedigree of Prairie Landing. The course was built by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1994, developed as part of the DuPage Airport Authority's broader plans for the land surrounding DuPage Airport — an unusual origin story that gives the layout one of its most distinctive quirks: planes regularly pass low overhead as you play. Rather than a distraction, it's become part of the course's identity.
Jones Jr. leaned into the site's flat, open terrain, drawing on prairie and links influences rather than fighting the landscape. Wide, sweeping fairways, fescue rough, and exposed conditions mean wind is a genuine factor on any given day. The design rewards strategic thinking over raw power, and the routing makes intelligent use of the open ground.
West Chicago sits in DuPage County, about 30 miles west of the city — far enough from the urban core to feel genuinely open, but well within reach for golfers based anywhere in the metro area. Prairie Landing has built a strong reputation as one of the better public-access options in the western suburbs.
