Few clubs in western New York carry the institutional weight of the Country Club of Buffalo. Founded in the late 19th century, it ranks among the oldest and most storied private clubs in the region, and its membership has long reflected the civic leadership of greater Buffalo. The course was designed by Walter Travis, one of the most influential early American golfer-architects, and his strategic imprint — favoring precise placement over raw power — remains central to how the layout plays today.
Travis-designed courses tend to reward thinking golfers rather than long hitters, and Buffalo's par 70 configuration leans into that philosophy. The shorter par leaves little room for a wayward hole or a careless afternoon; every stroke tends to matter. Firm, fast conditions and well-bunkered approaches are hallmarks of the Travis school, and members here have played within that tradition for generations.
Williamsville sits just east of Buffalo in Erie County, where the Niagara Frontier's open, lake-influenced landscape shapes the golfing calendar — a relatively short season played with genuine seasonal intensity.
