Harewood Downs is one of the older established clubs in Buckinghamshire, founded in 1910 and set across the rolling Chiltern Hills on the outskirts of Amersham. The course occupies genuine downland terrain — elevated, open in places, wooded in others — with the kind of natural contours that predate the earth-moving era of golf design. That topography does most of the heavy lifting, producing a layout that rewards local knowledge and punishes anything less than accurate ball-striking.
The Chilterns around Amersham are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the views from the higher points of the course reflect that designation. Beech woodland frames several holes, giving the round a distinctly English seasonal character — stark and atmospheric in winter, lush and enclosed come summer. Amersham itself is a commuter-belt market town with genuine historic depth, easily reached from London via the Metropolitan line.
At par 69, Harewood Downs plays shorter than a championship test, but the undulating lies and tree-lined corridors mean the course consistently demands more than the card first suggests.
