Carter Plantation sits in the Tangipahoa Parish lake country of southeastern Louisiana, about an hour north of New Orleans on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain's broader watershed. The course is part of a residential and resort community, a format that became increasingly popular across the Gulf South in the early 2000s, pairing golf with waterfront living and outdoor recreation. The terrain here is gentle Louisiana lowland, framed by pines, oaks, and the kind of open sky that makes the region feel distinctly different from the manicured corridors of more urban courses.
The layout was designed by David Toms, the Shreveport-born PGA Tour winner and Louisiana native son, which gives the course a genuine local pedigree rather than the anonymous stamp of a corporate design firm. Toms crafted a course that works naturally with the flat-to-rolling land, emphasizing strategic bunkering and water features rather than manufactured elevation.
For golfers visiting the New Orleans region, Carter Plantation offers a quieter, more rural alternative to the city's traditional municipal tracks — a full par 72 experience in a setting that rewards those willing to venture beyond the French Quarter.
