Few names in American resort golf carry the weight of PGA West. Anchored in the Coachella Valley outside Palm Springs, this sprawling complex became synonymous with target golf excess during the 1980s boom — and Greg Norman lent his name to one of its more playable, scenic members. Where Pete Dye's infamous Stadium Course nearby built a reputation for outright punishment, the Norman layout offers a somewhat more welcoming experience without surrendering the desert drama that defines the complex.
La Quinta sits at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, and that backdrop does a great deal of the visual work here. The Sonoran landscape — rocky outcroppings, native desert waste areas, sculpted palms, and the crisp winter light that draws golfers from across the country between November and April — gives the round a cinematic quality that a scorecard simply cannot convey.
PGA West as a destination is built around volume and variety, with multiple courses competing for your attention. The Norman course serves the resort guest who wants genuine desert golf atmosphere without the Tour-level brutality waiting just across the property.
