Few golf courses in the American Southwest can claim a backdrop quite like this one. Elephant Butte sits at the edge of Elephant Butte Lake, the largest reservoir in New Mexico, and the water defines everything about the experience here — the light, the wind patterns, the surprising lushness set against the surrounding high desert. The Rio Grande corridor runs through this stretch of Socorro County, and the course takes its name from that river relationship, "Sierra Del Rio" evoking the mountains that frame the valley on both sides.
Playing golf in this part of New Mexico means navigating the realities of desert elevation and afternoon wind off the lake. The terrain is characteristically open and sun-baked for much of the year, with warm temperatures drawing golfers well into autumn and back again early in spring — a genuine asset in a state where mountain courses shut down for months.
Elephant Butte itself is a small town that exists almost entirely around the lake and its recreational draw. Sierra Del Rio serves as the area's anchor public golf option, a destination round for visitors making the trip down from Truth or Consequences or up from Las Cruces.
